TELL
EUROPE FOR CITIZENSHIP – REMEMBRANCE
Our project was allocated in “Strand 1: European remembrance”. The programme aims to raise awareness of remembrance, common history and values and the Union’s aim. The Europe for Citizens Programme adopted for the period 2014-2020 is an important instrument aimed at getting the Union’s 500 million inhabitants to play a greater part in the development of the Union. By funding schemes and activities in which citizens can participate, the Programme is promoting Europe’s shared history and values, and fostering a sense of ownership for how the Union develops.
Due to various socio-political processes such as Brexit, today many Union’s citizens feel EU becomes an intangible idea. One of the main reasons it happens is that citizens, especially younger generations of EU citizens, are not fully aware of EU history and & its achievements, thus take them for granted. TELL focuses on commemoration of EU Charter of Human Rights and on learning about intolerance and its effects from human witnesses through the Human Library (HL) method.
The HL method turns people into “living Books”: people can choose to “read a book”, turning the pages of its real life in a face-to-face discussion. So, the “readers” can develop an active remembrance of our history of (in)tolerance and a personal ownership on common EU values drawing a lesson for a today where intolerance events are not yet ceased. Specifically, the readers have the opportunity to speak with direct/ indirect witnesses in a small group (1-3 people) just after choosing a Book from the catalogue. This will enable them to develop sense of community and motivation to create a more integrated EU based on core values. The HL method, will enhance intergenerational dialogue among youth and direct and indirect witnesses, and will empower those to play an active role in raising awareness on the EU core values and on the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. Reflecting on the contemporary democratic achievements, TELL will foster collective memory and a deeper feeling of belonging to EU community.
